ANAL EXPRESSION (UPON REQUEST)
WHAT IS ANAL EXPRESSION?
Dog anal expression, also known as anal gland expression, is a procedure performed to empty the anal glands, which are small sacs located on either side of a dog's anus. These glands produce a foul-smelling fluid that is normally expelled during bowel movements. However, sometimes the anal glands can become impacted or infected, leading to discomfort, irritation, and potential health issues for the dog.
During anal expression, a groomer or veterinarian applies gentle pressure to the external area surrounding the dog's anus to manually squeeze and empty the anal glands. This process helps remove excess fluid, clear any blockages, and alleviate discomfort for the dog. It's a routine procedure that is often recommended for dogs who have difficulty emptying their anal glands naturally or who develop issues such as anal gland impaction or infection.
Anal expression may be performed as part of a regular grooming appointment or as needed if a dog exhibits symptoms of anal gland problems, such as scooting or licking the anal area, discomfort during bowel movements, or a foul odor emanating from the rear end. While some dogs may never require anal expression, others may need it regularly to maintain anal gland health and comfort.
